Firms fined £600,000 over nuisance marketing – Which? News

Four companies behind 44 million spam emails, 15 million nuisance calls and one million spam texts have been fined a total of £600,000.

Hundreds of complaints

The ICO said hundreds of complaints from the public prompted its investigations that found that four UK firms had broken the law by not having people’s agreement to be contacted by them.

Complaints were made about the frequency and persuasive nature of the calls, and included one from a householder just home from major hospital surgery and another from the mother of an autistic seven-year-old distressed by being woken up by the calls.

Which? managing director of home services Alex Neill said: ‘Companies that pester people with unlawful nuisance calls and spam texts are rightly being held to account by the regulator.

‘These penalties must be enforced to ensure that the perpetrators are no longer able to bombard people with these unwelcome calls.’
